throw caution to the wind

The best plan of action would be to throw caution to the wind.
最善の策は思い切ってやってみることだ。

「throw caution to the wind」は、「後先考えずに行動する」「無謀になる」「思い切ったことをする」という意味です。

not have all day

I don’t have all day.
グズグズするなよ。

「not have all day」は、「一日中時間があるわけじゃない」＝「こっちは暇じゃない」＝「急いでくれ」という意味で使われます。

at stake

My future is at stake.
私の将来がかかっているんだ。

「at stake」は、「危機にさらされている」「危うくなって」「失う可能性がある」という意味です。

International Human Solidarity Day

International Human Solidarity Day is a day to celebrate our unity in diversity.
「人間の連帯国際デー」は、多様性の中での人類の団結を祝う日です。

毎年12月20日に行われる国際デーで、世界の貧困撲滅などのミレニアム開発目標の達成を目標とすることから始まり、SDGsの目標へとつながっています。

when (if) conditions permit

On-campus programs will resume as soon as conditions permit.
キャンパスでの対面プログラムは、状況が整い次第、再開する予定です。

「when (if) conditions permit」は、「事情が許せば」という意味です。

get away from it all

Sometimes I just want to get away from it all.

時々、すべてを忘れて旅にでも出たくなるよ。

「get away from it all」は、「すべての煩わしさから解放されて、日常とは全く異なる場所で休暇を取る」といったニュアンスで使われます。

be smitten with

They were totally smitten with each other.
彼らはお互いにベタ惚れだね。

「be smitten」は「殴られた」という意味ですが、「夢中になる」「ぞっこん」「惚れ込む」というスラングでも使われます。

grow on

I didn’t like math at first, but it has grown on me.
最初は数学が嫌いだったけど、だんだん好きになってきた。

「grow on」は「（不安・好意・関心などが」だんだん大きくなってくる、募ってくる」という意味です。

at face value

You shouldn’t accept things at face value.
物事を額面どおりに受け取ってはだめだよ。

「at face value」は「額面価格で」という意味ですが、「文字通りに」「表面通りの意味で」と比喩的にも使われます。

hit it off

We hit it off right from the start.
私たちはすぐに意気投合した。

「hit it off」は、「初対面で、意気投合する、仲良くやる、気が合う」という意味です。

letter of introduction

This letter does not authorize you to enter, remain or study in Canada.
この書面は、カナダへの入国、滞在、就学を許可するものではありません。

カナダのビザ申請が許可された後に発行される許可通知書（letter of introduction）に記載されている文章です。この書面とパスポートなどの必要書類を持参すると、カナダ入国時に空港で正式なビザが発給されます。

tertiary / post-secondary / higher / further education

Tertiary education, also called post-secondary education, is any level of education pursued beyond high school, including undergraduate and graduate credentials.
第3期教育（＝高等教育）は、ポストセカンダリー教育とも呼ばれ、学部や大学院の資格を含む、高校卒業後の教育レベルのことを指します。

他に、高等教育という意味で、higher education（イギリスでは大学教育）、further education（イギリスでは職業教育）なども使われます。

molecular test

You must take a molecular test within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of your flight to Canada.
カナダへのフライトの出発予定時刻から72時間以内にコロナのPCR検査を受ける必要があります。

「molecular test」は「分子検査」ですが、コロナのPCR検査という意味になります。

put ～ out

I don’t want to put you out.
君に迷惑をかけたくないよ。

「put（人）out」は、「～に迷惑をかける」という意味です。

on one’s side

Luck is on our side.
私たちは運が良いね。

「on one’s side」は、「～の味方」という意味です。

Omicron Covid variant

US President Joe Biden has called the Omicron Covid variant a “cause for concern, not a cause for panic” one day after it was detected in North America.
米国のバイデン大統領は、北米でオミクロン株が検出された翌日、「懸念材料だが、パニックは不要」と述べた。

コロナウイルスはCovid、変異株はvariantと言います。

get underway

It was due to begin at 8pm but did not get underway until 8.30pm.
午後8時に開始される予定だったが、始まったのは午後8時30分だった。

「get underway」は、「始まる、進む、開幕する」という意味になります。

strict curbs on

The move eases strict curbs that have locked out many citizens and tourists since borders were slammed shut at the start of the Covid pandemic.
この動きは、コロナの大流行により国境が閉ざされて以来、多くの市民や観光客を締め出してきた厳しい規制を緩和するものです。

「curb」は、「歩道の縁石、制限、抑制」という意味の単語です。

「strict curbs on～」で、「～に対する厳しい規制」という意味になります。

曲線という意味のカーブは「curve」ですね。

travel bubble

The government said it will work towards establishing a number of quarantine-free travel bubbles.
政府は、自己隔離なしのトラベルバブルの確立に取り組んでいくと述べた。

トラベルバブルとは、感染対策が講じられている国同士が安全なバブルで囲まれた地域とみなして自由に往来ができるようにする仕組みのことです。

one of a kind

My engagement ring was handcrafted so it’s one of a kind.
私の婚約指輪は手作りなので、一点ものです。

「one of a kind」は「独自の、比類のない、唯一無二の」という意味です。

national holiday / public holiday / bank holiday / statutory holiday

Labor Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in Japan celebrated on November 23 of each year.
勤労感謝の日は、日本では毎年11月23日に祝われる国民の祝日です。

祝日は、public holiday、bank holiday（イギリス）、statutory holiday（カナダ）とも言います。

double-jabbed

Japanese citizens who have been double-jabbed can visit Australia from December 1st without needing to quarantine.
ワクチン接種を2回完了している日本国籍者は、12月1日より隔離なしオーストラリアに入国できます。

「jab」は「皮下注射、予防接種」という意味です。「double-jabbed」になると「ワクチンを2回接種した」という意味になります。

morning person / early bird / morning lark

I’m not a morning person.
朝は弱いんだよ。

「morning person」は「朝型人間」という意味です。

早起きという意味で、「early bird」「morning lark」といった言い方もあります。

see one’s way clear

We couldn’t see our way clear to spending so much money at once.
一度にたくさんのお金を使うことには抵抗がありました。

「see one’s way clear」は、「できそうに思う」「喜んでする」という意味の慣用句です。

International Day for Tolerance

The United Nations is committed to strengthening tolerance by fostering mutual understanding among cultures and peoples.
国連は、文化と人々の相互理解を促進することで、寛容さを高めていくことに取り組んでいます。

11月16日は、国際寛容デー（International Day for Tolerance）です。
